Kang Eu-Jin

Han Gyoung-Hae
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the level of support for elderly parents given by the adult children who live apart from their parents and to investigate related factors. Special attention was given to the relationship between the living arrangement of elderly parents and the support behavior of children. Data were collected, using the structured questionnaire from 551 married women who have parents-in-law, yet do not live together. The statistical methods needed for the analysis were frequencies, oneway ANOVA, scheffe test, t-test, and multiple regression analysis.

It was shown that adult children kept quite frequent contact with their elderly parents. But the level of everyday helping behavior by adult children was lower than moderate level. There were no statistically significant differences in the level of assistance provided by adult children by the elderly parents¡¯ living arrangement. The proximity was the most important factor explaining the frequencies of contact and the level of everyday helping behavior of the children. Elderly¡¯s economic status played the most important part predicting the level of economic support given by adult children.
